Today marks day eight of the silage harvest, and phenomenal weather, cooperative machinery, and a talented and hard-working team has managed to bring in an incredible amount of very high-quality feed, nearly 120000 tons, over the past week! We are about 80% harvested, and “Maize Mountain” is now 325 feet wide, 700 feet long and 45 feet high. The pile building team has done a phenomenal job, and the pile is a perfectly shaped and symmetrical work of art. You can view the pile making process live

The first day of silage harvest went well, and by the end of the day four choppers had been tuned in and the resulting feed tested to ensure that the crop was being chopped at the proper length and that the corn kernels are properly processed. Moistures and maturity are perfect, and today we are working on adding two additional choppers to the lineup of harvesting machinery. These will also have to be adjusted to ensure the resulting feed is perfect for our girls before we can put them into full

The rain shortened our seventh day of silage harvest yesterday, but we still managed to have a pretty good harvest day. The eight choppers, 11 pack trackers, and 35 semis we were using managed to harvest around 500 acres before the rain shut us down at 2:00. We were short of our goal by about 300 acres, but still had a very good day! We currently have about half of our planned acreage harvested, which is a very good start! We managed to capture drone footage of three of the choppers in action wo

Welcome to Maize Mountain! Several have asked why so much machinery needs to be on the pile. Storing corn silage is an anerobic process, meaning we must remove as much oxygen as possible to preserve the quality of this ever-so-important feed. This is also the reason that we cover the pile at the end of harvest with two layers of protective plastic- layer one is an oxygen barrier that functions just like saran wrap, and layer two goes on top with UV protection to further guard this crop from the

Keep making that feed! It makes us smile to see this video of our girls enjoying last year's crop while they watch this year's harvest take place. Totally unbothered by the commotion happening just outside their window, all these ladies seem to care about is that the chopper doesn't stop for long! We are waiting on the last fields of corn to be ready for harvest so that we can complete corn silage 2025. This means that there is still time to guess how many sidewalls cover the finished pile! All things considered, day one of silage harvest 2021 went extremely well! We now have six well tuned forage harvesters, a fleet of semis, 10 packing tractors and a small army of farmers hard at work bringing the crop in from the fields. https://live4.brownrice.com/embed/corncam1 If you’ve had a chance to check out the link to our live feed from the corn pile cam, you can tell by the size of the pile that for a first day, yesterday went pretty well! For the past 35 harvests, Our Family has been

Corn silage harvest was finished a little over three weeks ago, and the team has turned their attention from harvest to fertilizing the land and planting our cover crops. During the harvest, we took a couple of moments on several different occasions to capture the pile making process with our drone. During the 21 day harvest, over 5,000 acres of silage were harvested and packed into storage. The finished pile is 300 feet wide, 850 feet long, 42' high at the peak and contains nearly 125,000 tons

This season, we’ve added a new piece of equipment to our lineup! Many of our neighbors who live out in the country are used to seeing large sprayers working in the fields—but not every part of the countryside is suited for big machines. Areas like ditches and waterways require something more nimble so we can continue to protect our natural resources. Enter a little ingenuity, and you’ll find our UTV sprayer! This machine may be small, but it’s mighty. It features individually controlled nozzles

The end is in sight! Now that we are past the halfway point of corn silage, it is time to begin the monumental task of covering the feed so that it can begin to ensile. It may seem straightforward, but this is a carefully planned process, much like all other aspects of harvest. A special roll of plastic is stretched over the top of the pile and unfolded carefully so that two layers of protective film lay flat and hole-free over the silage. It wasn't a particularly windy day in Lincoln today, but

Corn silage harvest is off to a great start. The machinery is fairly well set and has been behaving well so far... But it is machinery, and this can change quickly. By Wednesday afternoon, our harvest lineup consisted of six forage harvesters, 30 feed trucks and 10 pack tractors. A huge Thank You goes out to Derek Ducat and his team for providing chopper number 6, along with a fleet of trucks, a pack tractor and the talented operators to run all of this equipment. The extra help was very much ap

Harvesting nearly 8,000 acres of silage at peak quality requires a huge fleet of machinery operated by skilled operators and a HUGE amount of preplanning. Watching this machinery in action reminds us of a ballet, with the machines making precise and well-planned moves to maximize productivity. We captured one of our custom operators, Travis Vanderkinter, using a really cool maneuver to switch out dump carts on the go... Travis manages to keep the silage flowing nearly non-stop throughout the ent

Spring planting season is off to a very slow start in our region this year, with cool and wet weather keeping many fields unfit for planting. Our no-till fields, as usual, are really shining this Spring. The soil structure in these fields is excellent and often we find that these fields are ready to plant sooner than our tilled fields that are right next to one another. We captured this drone video of one of the planters in action no-tilling corn into a field that had previously been in alfalfa.

Yesterday was day eight of silage harvest, and rain showers shut us down at about 4:00 pm. The team still managed to get a very respectable 501 acres harvested, bringing our harvested total to 3,850 acres. This puts us at about 55% complete. With eight choppers running, the tonnage delivered to the feed pile is pretty incredible, and the total acres of prime quality forage harvested also changes quite rapidly. How quickly, you ask? How about 70 acres in 12 seconds....wait for it! Happy Thursday,

Corn Silage Harvest 2021 is behind us, and our team has turned their attention to planting thousands of acres of cover crops, high moisture corn harvest, and fifth crop alfalfa. This year's harvest went exceptionally well, and the yield was well above average. Excellent weather, cooperative machinery, and a fantastic team allowed us to harvest 6250 acres in 9 1/2 days. The excellent weather also really pushed the maturity of the corn quickly, and keeping up with the maturing crop was a challenge

Corn Planting 2021 is officially behind us, and we are thankful to everyone who was involved in making this season a success! Mother Nature provided us with an excellent planting window, and everyone involved with the planting made VERY good use of the abundant sunshine! Today's drone video was taken last Saturday, as we were finishing planting on one of our cover cropped fields. This field was planted to a mixture of turnips, tillage radish, clover, and winter rye after fourth crop harvest last

Summer is flying by! This was the scene Monday as our team hustled to mow our fourth-crop alfalfa. This will be the last crop of alfalfa we harvest this year. The alfalfa will regrow, but we need to leave the regrowth in the field to act as a snow fence through the winter. This allows the snow to accumulate and act like insulation, which helps to protect the alfalfa plants from the harsh temperatures of winter. When you are a farmer, it seems you spend the entire summer preparing for winter, and

The wet conditions this year made the silage harvest a bit hectic, but we still managed to capture a few videos while it was taking place. This video was captured on October 26, our last day of harvest. Two of our six choppers, one an 8-row unit and the other a 12-row machine, were hard at work harvesting this 100-acre field. With each pass of the choppers, another 60-foot swath of corn was harvested. Even with the slow down, the team managed to harvest this entire field in under six hours ... w

Today’s sunshine is a welcome sight. Corn silage harvest continues to move along at a brisk pace, with over 125,000 tons of prime, quality silage already placed securely into storage. As you can see in the accompanying video, we have made the difficult decision to do much of the chopping into dump carts instead of directly into the semis due to the recent rains. The dump carts transfer the freshly chopped silage to the waiting semis and then hydraulically lift and dump their load of silage into

As is tradition, Santa recently visited the farm to do his annual check on the milk supply and our Girls. What was a bit different about this year's visit is that Santa actually took the time to do a Public Service Announcement while he was in the yard. It seems that Santa fully understands that ounce for ounce, it's hard to match the nutrition that's packed into each and every dairy product. No worries Santa, America's Dairy Farmers are hard at work to ensure an adequate supply! Have a fantasti

We found a little time to get the drone up and capture one of the corn planters in action on the field directly adjacent to one of our dairies. We picked this field as we plan to share a lot of pictures from this particular field this year, as we will very soon be going live with the Kinnard Farms Corn Cam. Our Team is busy making arrangements to set up a live video feed on this field, allowing anyone with internet access to pull up a live feed from this field 24/7 throughout the 2021 growing se

Corn Silage 2018 has officially begun, and the enthusiasm amongst our team is contagious. Anyone who has ever been involved in a corn silage harvest knows the incredible mixture of emotions involved ... excitement, satisfaction, and sheer exhaustion combine to make corn silage harvest an incredible experience that can’t easily be put into words. This drone video captured the very first loads of corn silage harvested this fall being delivered to the feed pad. After weeks of intensive lab testing

Does anyone else find harvest videos oddly relaxing? Watching the crop come in never gets old, and knowing it'll feed our girls all year makes it even better. Harvest is such a busy time around the farm that these videos often don't make it to the feed until a bit later. With the cold temps, this seemed like an opportune time to reminisce on warmer days, like this one- just 140 days ago! Have a fantastic Friday evening! #midwestfarming #cornsilage #regenerativeagriculture #sustainablefarming #fa

With thousands of cover cropped acres to plant in the coming days, our Outdoor Team needs an efficient method of determining which fields are perfect and which ones need a bit more time. Fortunately, we have a secret weapon in our arsenal; Buddy the Dog! We have determined that when the cover crop nearly hides Buddy as he bounds through the fields, it’s perfect for planting....Imagine that, Agronomic advice from a puppy! Come visit us at Breakfast on the Farm tomorrow morning to check out this plane and plenty of other awesome farm machinery up-close! ----- Farmers everywhere are discovering the benefits of planting a cover crop, and they have gotten quite creative in developing new methods to plant these cover crops. Earlier today we were visited by Dean Heimerman of Countryside Aviation. Dean uses his amazing piloting skills and a specialized plane to plant cover crops into standing cash crops without damaging

Our timelapse camera was able to capture the harvest action from the last seven days of corn silage harvest back in October. As you can see in the video, our team was subjected to all kinds of weather as we brought in the last of the harvest ... rain, sleet and even snow. Even with the crazy weather, the team still managed to average over 11,000 tons of silage delivered to the pile each day. This pile is one of two and contains more than 80,000 tons of high-quality feed. Six choppers and 18 dump
