During winter, the California coastline experiences "king tides" - exceptionally high tides that occur during a new or full moon. At Monterey Bay's Elkhorn Slough, these occurrences can cause flooding that significantly impacts Highway 1 and the Elkhorn railway. King tides offer us a window into our not-so-distant future.
