The maps below are from the Climate Prediction center Seasonal Drought Outlook and the National Climatic Data Center Drought Termination and Amelioration index.

The Drought Monitor summary map identifies general areas of drought and labels them by intensity. D1 is the least intense level and D4 the most intense. Drought is defined as a moisture deficit bad enough to have social, environmental or economic effects.

Jan 8, 2025 · As we kick off 2025, what’s in store for drought? Through March 2025, the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center predicts a pattern similar to a traditional La Niña: warm conditions for the southern and eastern U.S. and dry conditions in the southern U.S.

The U.S. Drought Monitor is updated each Thursday to show the location and intensity of drought across the country, which uses a five-category system, from Abnormally Dry (D0) conditions to Exceptional Drought (D4).

NOAA CPC’s U.S. Monthly and Seasonal Drought Outlooks show predicted trends for areas currently experiencing drought and indicate areas where droughts may develop. The Drought Outlooks take many factors into consideration, including short and long-range forecasts, regional drought history, and climate anomaly patterns (“teleconnections”).
