After a judge threatened to block an order federalizing Washington’s police, the Justice Department issued a new directive leaving the city’s police chief in charge, for now.

After President Donald Trump’s deployment of the National Guard in Washington, D.C., his efforts hit a roadblock in federal court as the city’s attorney general challenged U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s order stripping the local police chief of power.

The president has more power over the nation’s capital than other cities, but D.C. has elected its mayor and city council since the Home Rule Act was signed in 1973.
