Hurricane Erin is forecast to remain well offshore but still bring hazardous currents and possible erosion like previous offshore hurricanes before it.
Hurricane Erin officially formed early Friday, Aug. 15, marking the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season. The system is also expected to become the first major hurricane of this season,
"The threat for coastal hazards continues to increase," Outer Banks officials said Saturday as Hurricane Erin will bring 12-foot high breaking waves and flooding to the North Carolina coast.
A tropical wave was forecast to move off the west coast of Africa in the next day or two. Thereafter, some gradual development of the wave is possible during the middle to latter part of next week while it moves generally west-northwestward across the central tropical Atlantic.
