A lawsuit has been filed with the Illinois Supreme Court in an effort to throw out the current legislative maps that the plaintiffs said are the result of extreme gerrymandering. The complaint, filed by State Rep.

The top Republican in the Illinois House of Representatives sued to invalidate the chamber’s Democratic-approved district map, saying it was a product of “extreme partisan gerrymandering.”

The lawsuit comes after House Republicans failed to gain seats in the two election cycles since a new map was drawn in 2021 following the census and implemented for the 2022 election. Republicans lost five seats in 2022 and failed to win any back in 2024, leaving House Democrats with 78 members in the 118-member House.

Republicans in the Illinois House say the state’s current legislative map is unconstitutional and illegally favors Democrats, and the GOP is asking the state’s Supreme Court to intervene.
