What Hi-Fi? on MSNThe iPhone 17's 120Hz screen could finally convince me it's time to upgrade
I can see a few reasons. Firstly, the 120Hz refresh rate. Many would say it's about time Apple gave its base level iPhone a higher refresh rate, and they have a point. Even mid-range Samsung phones now have 120Hz – double the rate of the iPhone 16 – so Apple couldn't really not make the upgrade.
Helping to power that new screen is an updated Apple A19 chip. It still uses a 6-core CPU with two large cores and four smaller efficiency cores, a 16-core Neural Engine, and a 5-core GPU that Apple says is about 20 percent faster than the one in the Apple A18.
Now, a new report from Majin Bu on X shows the four screen sizes for the iPhone 17 series, in the form of screen protectors. Majin Bu is a tipster with a strong, though not perfect, track record. They work with case and screen protector manufacturers, so a report like this has a strong chance of authenticity.
Phone 17 Pro Max is almost here, and rumors indicate it could check nearly every box that users say motivates an upgrade decision.

Display analyst Ross Young has released early information about the iPhone 17’s display and he believes Apple is planning to change up the screen size of the iPhone 17 Plus.
Not only is the iPhone 17 screen larger than the one on its predecessor, it boasts a Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion, meaning it has an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling (you can perhaps thank my colleague Igor Bonifacic for willing that into existence ).
