Three musicians are creating a digital map about the history of clawhammer banjo players of Southwest Virginia.

Eddie Adcock used to be a world class banjo player before his body was racked with tremors. Now, after an operation, he's back to picking up where he left off.

He loved developing young talent and always invited novice banjo players to join the seasoned veterans at all the jam sessions.

You just had to be there, honestly… that music hits different.

The banjo is a happy instrument, and the players laugh and joke. On this day, I count 50 banjo players. They don't object if someone shows up to strum noisily on a washboard.

Béla Fleck and Abigail Washburn, award-winning banjo players and a couple, will perform pieces inspired by Americana at the Koger Center in Columbia Feb. 22.
