“With the Yankees not in the free-agent market for a top-line starter, their options, if they so choose, will likely be one-year types. Chris Bassitt, Lucas Giolito and Zack Littell are the best second-tier options remaining. But adding any of those pitchers will cost more money than Peralta or Gore,” he wrote.
Plenty of Red Sox fans voiced their displeasure with the loss of Bregman on social media in the immediate aftermath of the news. But now a former star player for the team has joined that chorus, as four-time Red Sox All-Star reliever Jonathan Papelbon criticized the team’s executives and issued a warning about their ability to compete next season.
The New York Yankees claimed former Boston Red Sox reliever Kaleb Ort off waivers from the Astros on Friday. The 33-year-old, who pitched for the Red Sox from 2021-23, spent 2024-25 with Houston where he posted a 4.08 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 71 outings.
“Boston signed Sikkema, a 27-year-old left-handed pitcher, to a minor league deal. New York selected him 38th overall in 2019 out of Missouri. The Yankees traded him and two other minor league pitchers to the Royals for Andrew Benintendi on July 27, 2022,” he wrote.
All-Star infielder Alex Bregman signed for the Chicago Cubs on a five-year, $175 million deal last week. The deal comes despite the Boston Red Sox's strong links with the third baseman.
Former Yankees' first-round draft pick T.J. Sikkema has signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox in free agency.
