The last time Ukraine signed a peace accord with Russia, 10 years ago, it brought only sporadic violence, mounting distrust, and eventually full-scale war. Here’s what we can learn from that history.

Kyiv agreed to the U.S.-proposed truce during March 11 talks in Jeddah, contingent on Russia’s adherence to its terms.

But a day later, Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council announced that Russian troops had fired at Ukrainian positions at least 10 times. The ceasefire failed to materialise into anything substantive.

The diplomatic effort coincided with a Russian claim that its troops have driven the Ukrainian army out of a key town in Russia's Kursk border region.
