The Royals were irked after a controversial safe call on a Jazz Chisholm steal attempt late in Game 1 did not get overturned.

Aaron Judge, who came in as a .211 career postseason hitter, went 0-for-4 with a walk and three strikeouts. In his final regular-season appearance exactly a week earlier, Judge went 0-for-5 with five strikeouts in a meaningless game against Pittsburgh.

Hours later, in a 6-5 loss to the Yankees, the Royals reverted. Starter Michael Wacha walked the first batter he faced. He walked the last batter he faced, too. Angel Zerpa, who relieved Wacha, walked in a run. So did John Schreiber, who relieved Zerpa.
