Port of Montreal dockworkers are set to walk off the job Monday morning as tensions in a labor dispute ratchet up, threatening to freeze cargo at two terminals at one of Canada’s busiest seaports.

The union representing longshore workers at the Port of Montreal says work at two terminals could come to a standstill next week after it served a 72-hour strike notice today.

The port of Montreal on Friday said customers would experience an operational slowdown after a union issued a notice for a three-day strike next week at two terminals that account for 41% of its container traffic.

The SCFP Longshoremen's Union, Local 375, filed a notice with the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) at 7 a.m. this morning for a three-day strike at the Viau and Maisonneuve container terminals. As a result of these developments,

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is very concerned about the impact a potential new strike at the Port of Montreal would have on small businesses.

But the union says its members working at the Termont terminals at the Port of Montreal will only hold a three-day strike. The terminals operator expect work to resume Thursday at 7 a.m.
