Scientists have discovered a strange new toad species smaller than a fingernail in a rainforest in northeast Brazil, shedding more light on the rich diversity of life forms in the region.

Not every animal gets the luck of the draw when it comes to looks. While some creatures get by with soft fur and wide eyes, others work with extra flaps, strange noses, or skin that looks half-melted.

The team eventually tracked down a second similar-looking frog in 2013 at a different national park and a third frog in 2023 at yet another site, the study said.
