Buildings shook and people fled onto the streets of Turkey's biggest city, after three consecutive earthquakes – as strong as 6.2 magnitude – hit before 1pm local time.

Several earthquakes have hit Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey, with the strongest having a magnitude of 6.2. This morning’s tremors were also felt in the Turkish capital of Ankara, 275 miles away.

Turkey’s largest city of Istanbul was hit by a 6.2-magnitude earthquake, the US Geological Survey said, though no damage or injuries were immediately reported by authorities.
