The Penguin has now kicked off on HBO, and the first episode of The Batman spin-off is a grisly return to the dark underworld of Gotham. It mostly focuses on Oz Cobb's new bid for power following Carmine Falcone's death, but there is a little subtle tease in there for fans of Matt Reeves' movie.

The Penguin is delving further into the crime families of Gotham established in The Batman, with each one having connections to the other. By the time of The Penguin episode 1's ending, a war between these crime families is already brewing after the death of Carmine Falcone in The Batman.

The Penguin takes the byway of streaming, to tell the story of the power grab by Oz Cobb and Gotham after the catastrophic deluge. Right off the bat, The Penguin is a by-product of The Batman, and Reeves' DC expansion.
