There has been heated discussion of the plans for the rebuilt Nice-Middleton Bridge connecting Maryland and Virginia on U.S. 301 ahead of a vote next month required for the project to move forward.
The bridge will replace the current Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge, which links Newburg, Maryland to Dahlgren, Virginia on U.S. Route 301 across the Potomac River.
The steel two-lane bridge was constructed in 1940 and was initially known as the Potomac River Bridge. It was named for the former Maryland governor — Nice served from 1935 to 1939 — in 1967.
