You know it’s a hobby when they start spending considerable sums of money on the minutiae that define the hobby and have no other use but to further it. For instance, my brother collects stamps.

That, to me, is a hobby. But cooking? Cooking is just cooking, right? Before I became a food writer, I had another newspaper job that involved writing about something else I loved.

I have recently discovered the joys of cooking for pleasure rather than out of necessity. It has also become my only personality trait.

A year later, I tried it myself and made a complete meal. After that (laughing), no cooking for about 20 years. Then, in my 40s, I became interested again, and now it’s sort of a hobby.
