More Mickey Cartoons Entering Public Domain Nearly a year ago on January 1, 2024, “Steamboat Willie,” and the original versions of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, entered the public domain.

Not as much as you might be assuming. Only one iteration of Mickey Mouse, the version used in the 1928 cartoon in which he originated, Steamboat Willie, is now public domain.

In essence, Mickey Mouse does indeed enter public domain Monday, but only the specific depiction character from the "Steamboat Willie" cartoon.
