The great funk band Kool and the Gang began 50 years ago in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Kool & the Gang brings long list of hits to Green Music Center in Rohnert Park Robert “Kool” Bell traces the group’s trek from backup band to hits to movie soundtracks.

“Kool & the Gang overshadowed anything else he was allowed to do as a solo artist,” says Eastmond, who is now an adjunct professor at NYU’s Department of Music.

In celebration Kool & The Gang's 60th anniversary next year, the group announced their new album People Just Wanna Have Fun on Wednesday.

Kool & the Gang, known for hits like Jungle Boogie, Celebration and Ladies Night, celebrates 55 years of music and over 80 million albums sold.

The group’s funk, disco and pop songs have been sampled over 1,800 times, but haven’t collected the same accolades as many contemporaries. A new boxed set takes a look back.
