Michigan is running out of head coaching options, and one NFL coach with a familiar last name could emerge as a controversial possibility.
Longtime rivals Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh are the NFL's longest-tenured head coaches. The Pittsburgh Steelers ' leader was given the reins in 2007. Harbaugh was hired by the Ravens one year later. This is the first time, however, that both have been named coaches on the hot seat.
DeBoer, 51, should be the favorite, having taken Washington to the national championship game, where he lost to Michigan. To call him the safest pick isn’t to diminish him. But like most of the candidates, the timing is tricky, with DeBoer leading Alabama into a first-round playoff game against Oklahoma this Friday.
