The massive Canyon Fire tearing through the El Paso Mountains south of Ridgecrest has taken a heartbreaking turn, as the family of a California pilot identified their loved one as a victim of the suspected plane crash that ignited the blaze Thursday.

A single-engine plane crashed and turned upside down at the Cape Cod Gateway Airport on Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported as a result of the crash, the Barnstable Police Department said in a statement.

The plane took off from the Eastern West Virginia Regional Airport at 7:19 p.m. and was last seen at 10:40 p.m. near Lancaster before the crash.
