The family of Sonya Massey, a Black woman who was fatally shot by police in Illinois in July 2024, will receive $10 million as part of a settlement with officials from Sangamon County, the attorney representing the family said on Wednesday.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump told reporters the settlement, approved Tuesday night by the Sangamon County Board, is poignant.

The Sangamon County Board approved the settlement Tuesday night, allowing taxpayers to avoid a drawn-out and likely traumatic lawsuit over the summertime shooting by former deputy Sean Grayson.
