Sorensen has a ton of experience as a pro coach on special teams units. His first NFL job came under Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll as an assistant special teams coach from 2013-16. Prior to joining the 49ers he was the special teams coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021.

The 49ers are hoping to keep Sorensen around on Kyle Shanahan's staff in a lesser role, just not as the defensive play-caller. Sorensen has spent the last three years in the organization, holding titles of defensive assistant, defensive passing game coordinator and nickelback coach before being named defensive coordinator prior to last season.
