In an affirmation of his status as one of the best IndyCar drivers of his generation, Alex Palou took the lead from Marcus Ericsson with 14 laps to go and led the rest of the way to win the 109th Indianapolis 500,
Boles said he offered Callum Ilott, Kyle Kirkwood and Marcus Ericsson the chance to skip the banquet, but they showed up. Those drivers' cars failed post-race inspection and were penalized. Ilott had finished 12th but is shown 33rd; Kirkwood, from sixth to 32nd; and Ericsson from second to 31st.
It looked like Ryan Hunter-Reay might be heading to a second career Indy 500 victory as he was pacing the field past the halfway point of the race. With 30 laps to go, however, he stalled out in the pits and fell all the way to last place among the drivers still out on the track.
