Columbia Pictures’ Saturday Night from Jason Reitman debuted at $265k, a great $53k per theater that’s the second-best limited opening of the year, and the best since June when Kinds Of Kindness also opened in 5 theaters (to a $75k PTA). It’s been a long a slightly dower wait for something to pop.

This is a movie that so badly wants to be as cool as its source material that it trips over itself into something so old-fashioned and dully familiar that no amount of retro sheen can boost its cool b

It's not that any movie could be expected to capture the complexity of early Saturday Night Live. But in capturing that first night, Reitman reduces Gilda Radner to a smile, Jane Curtin to a smirk, Laraine Newman (Emily Fairn) to a running gag about quick changes, and Rosie Shuster to a sidekick.

With “Saturday Night,” director Jason Reitman deftly captures the magic and madness that went into creating the first episode of the beloved and long-running late-night series, “ Saturday Night Live ” — which kicks off its 50th season on Sept. 28.
