ST. LOUIS (AP) — Storm systems sweeping across the Midwest have left several people dead, including nine killed after a tornado sparked a mass casualty event in southeastern Kentucky. Kentucky authorities said there were severe injuries as well as a twister tore across Laurel County late Friday.

The storms Friday afternoon tore roofs off buildings, ripped bricks off of siding, and downed trees and power lines as residents were urged to take cover.

Storm system brought strong winds, large hail, tornadoes and thunderstorms to the Midwest on Thursday. The severe weather is expected to shift and continue over the weekend.

A busy stretch of severe thunderstorms is underway due to record heat and now the threats are ramping up, putting major metro areas from Chicago to Nashville under threat as the country hits the peak of tornado season.

As severe weather is fresh in our minds from Thursday night's storms, another threat of severe weather looms Friday night. Temperatures will be hot again Friday as most communities will top out in the mid-80s for highs.
