Lightning may not strike in the same place twice, but in Minnesota, it turns out one off-duty zoo worker can happen upon and rescue two different wounded owls on the same day.

One of the two owls rescued by a Minnesota woman in a story that went viral this week has died, but the other is still getting medical care.

DULUTH, Minn. — A snowy owl rescued from the grill of a car Monday at Bayfront Festival Park in Duluth has been euthanized. But a great gray owl rescued by the same woman earlier in the day is still alive and being treated by veterinarians in the Twin Cities.

A snowy owl was rescued Monday evening by a woman who was surprised to find it trapped in the grille of a car in a Duluth parking lot. Annabell Whelan, a good Samaritan who had also rescued another owl earlier in the day,

Whelan scooped the owl up in a blanket, transferred him to a dog crate in the car and dropped the great gray owl off at Wildwoods. He was sent along with another animal to the University of Minnesota’s Raptor Center in St. Paul. But the snowy owl she found hours later was in a much scarier situation, she said.

A northern Minnesota woman is being praised for rescuing not one, but two owls in the same day and in two different locations.

I definitely thought that I had had my fix of owls with the first one,” said Whelan, 22, a Lake Superior Zoo guest experience manager who graduated earlier this year with a biology and environmental science degree.
