I’m probably a little late to answer this, but I would recommend picking out a few caves to visit beforehand... There is a loop you can drive through that has a whole bunch of caves, some of which are among the “best” ones there. Hopkins Chocolate Cave, for example.

Might be a great day, less people. Track weather to see if you need a 4 wheel drive. Might not be a bad idea to call the ranger station. Amazing place to explore!

The campground has 43 spaces, and it is first come, first serve only - no reservations. We were there the weekend after Labor Day and had no trouble getting a spot even though we arrived at 3 PM. We were told that they are much busier in the summer though and especially on holiday weekends.
