We drove right up to the front and could easily park there. The buildings and grounds were beautiful. It would have been nice if we had been able to enter too.Full review by UKfamily123

Can we picnic as a group in the union buildings garden during the week. Is there a cost? Do we need to book?
A:
No cost just be careful, do not want to become a statistic. Would rather go to botanical garden for picnics safer because its closed of from the outside.

However, I suggest you move as group and do not carry any valuable items in the evening, My TIP- Always be observant of individuals moving up and down the parks , all day long. You find them in almost all the parks. So try to stay away from parks in the evenings

During the day it should be fine. Sadly, South Africa is a crime riddled country, so you should always be alert. We often go to the Union Buildings for walks or to take photos and we have never had a problem. I would most definitely not recommend you go walking there in the dark. Seeing you will be visiting in September you may be lucky enough to see Jacaranda trees in bloom. By the way, taking photos from the Union Buildings you will see Pretoria towards the south, if you can, visit my favourite place...Freedom Park. There you will be able to take photos of Pretoria to the north - you will be able to take awesome photos of the Union Buildings from there. I hope you have a good and safe experience visiting Pretoria.
