Holidays can be thematic, celebrating or commemorating particular groups, events, or ideas, or non-thematic, days of rest that do not have any particular meaning. In Commonwealth English, the term can refer to any period of rest from work, such as vacations or school holidays.
There are eleven Federal Holidays recognized by the United States Government (5 U.S.C. 6103). On these days, all non-essential government employees are off work, and most government offices (including post offices) are closed.
If a holiday falls on a Sunday, for most Federal employees, the following Monday will be treated as a holiday for pay and leave purposes. (See Section 3(a) of Executive Order 11582, February 11, 1971.)
