All solid forms of chlorine add either CYA or CH with the FC. The FC is consumed and the CYA or CH builds up both of which are bad if they get too high.

In our recommended CYA range, you shock your pool at about 15ppm of chlorine. At 100ppm CYA, the shock level increases to 39ppm of chlorine.
